Why Parents Should Be Asking More About Their Child’s Curriculum

Choosing a school is one of the biggest decisions a parent can make—but too often, that choice is based on reputation, facilities, or fees, rather than what should be the most important factor: how and what your child will be taught.

It’s time more parents started asking the hard questions about curriculum.

A school’s curriculum is not just a list of subjects. It’s the framework that shapes how your child learns to think, absorb information, and engage with the world. The same content—say, fractions in maths or ecosystems in science—can be delivered in vastly different ways. One school may rely on rote learning and worksheets; another might explore the same topic through baking, outdoor exploration, or hands-on projects.

Which do you think your child will remember?

Children don’t all learn the same way. Some are visual learners, some are kinaesthetic, some thrive in open-ended discussions, and others need structure. If the curriculum doesn’t allow room for different styles of learning, students who don’t fit the mould can be left behind—not because they aren’t capable, but because the system wasn’t built for them.

It’s a mistake to assume that a well-resourced school guarantees a quality education. Some still rely on rigid, outdated methods. Others may have glossy brochures but little focus on the individual. What truly matters is whether the teaching approach aligns with how students actually learn—and whether the curriculum is flexible, relevant, and responsive to a changing world.

As a parent, you have the right—and the responsibility—to ask:

How is the curriculum taught?

Is it inquiry-based, experiential, or textbook-driven?

How are different learning styles supported?

Does it teach children to think, question, and create—or just memorise?

Understanding your child’s curriculum is a powerful step toward advocating for their success. Education is not one-size-fits-all. A school that recognises this—and teaches accordingly—can be life-changing.

So don’t be afraid to dig a little deeper, ask questions, experience the classroom environment, and inquire as to how the students learn; because how your child is taught will shape how they see the world.
